Turning Grief Into Guidance: My Probate Journey
I’ve been in real estate since 2000, but my true calling found me when my beloved Aunt Dottie passed away. Suddenly, my cousin and I were thrust into an entirely different world, one that felt cold and mechanical at a time when we needed warmth and compassion most. Deep in grief, we were forced to make enormous decisions: funeral arrangements, cleaning out her home, preparing it for the market, and even caring for her elderly cat, Susie. The weight of going through her personal belongings while trying to make rational decisions was overwhelming. In her grief-stricken state, my cousin rented five storage units and simply filled them with a hodgepodge of items that should have been discarded or donated, but the pain was too raw to face those choices.
For over seven years, Aunt Dottie’s belongings sat untouched in those storage units. Every spring, I urged my cousin to clean them out and stop the financial drain, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. It was always too hot, too cold, or too rainy but the truth was, it felt wrong to throw away the treasured possessions of someone we loved so much. Meanwhile, we spent our evenings after work cleaning her house, hunting for vendors, coordinating repairs and painting. It was exhausting. As a child of the Depression era, if Aunt Dottie ever had something, she still didand sorting through a lifetime of memories while grieving felt impossible.
Over the years as a real estate professional, I’ve worked with countless families facing this same heartbreaking situation. Some lived far from their parents’ homes, burning through vacation days and personal time trying to manage cleanouts and repairs from a distance. Family disagreements over what to keep, what to sell, and how to handle the estate only added to the stress. Finding reliable, trustworthy service providers feels like an impossible task when you’re already overwhelmed. One client had to bring his mother to his home in another state when she became fatally ill, leaving her house fully furnished. After her death, weeks turned into months, then yearsand he simply couldn’t get back to managing it. As the home sat vacant, weeds overtook the yard, and vandals struck. Our team stepped in, cleaned up the damage, salvaged precious family photos and memorabilia, and prepared the home for sale. Watching families struggle through what my cousin and I experienced ignited my passion to help others navigate this painful process with more ease and compassion.
